Five Arrested for Attacking Teachers

Five persons have been arrested at Atrama near Adjako Buoho in the Afigya Kwabre District of the Ashanti Region for allegedly attacking teachers of the Osei Kwadwo Junior High School (JHS).

The school has remained closed for the past week after three teachers were hospitalized and four others suffered minor injuries during a violent attack on them by some aggrieved residents of Atrama in the Afigya Kwabre District of the Ashanti Region for spanking a female student

Assemblyman for the area, Duncan Nkrumah Poku who confirmed the arrest to Ultimate Fm’s Joseph Oppong Brenya, said it took the intervention of the Regional Police Commander DCOP Nathan Kofi Boakye for the arrest to be made.

He said teachers abandoned their classrooms since the attack for fear of recurring attacks on them by the angry residents who are hell bent on visiting violence on them to avenge the 31 lashes given to Doris Acheampong for verbally abusing one of the teachers.

“We are currently collaborating with the police to ensure that peace prevails because the situation is affecting teaching and learning in the school”, he disclosed.

Mr. Nkrumah Poku observed that if the teachers refuse to resume work immediately, it will adversely affect the education of their wards underscoring the need for the impasse to be resolved earlier.

Meanwhile the Afigya Kwabre District Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Madam Stella Ofori Atta told Ultimate news; the teachers may reconsider their decision since some of the perpetrators of the attack have been arrested.

“We cannot force our teachers to the school when their safety is not guaranteed. It is for that reason the school has remained closed”, she said.

According to her, it is strange that residents of the community could take the law into their own hands and visit violence on teachers who are in the area to carry out the mandated activities by imparting knowledge.

“It is unacceptable for the residents to vent their spleen on our teachers and I am grateful some arrests have been made this time round”, she stated.
