The Northern Regional Police Command has taken delivery of 16 mountain bicycles valued at GH¢5,000 from two banking institutions for patrols.
The donation from the Tamale Branches of Ecobank and National Investment Bank (NIB) respectively, was in response to an appeal from the National Patrol Department (NDP) of the Ghana Police Service to corporate institutions in the region, to help the unit.
As part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the two banks pooled resources to purchase the bicycles in uplifting community policing in the region.
Northern Regional Police Commander DCOP Ken Yeboah who received the bicycles on behalf of the command, thanked Ecobank and NIB for the gesture promising the items will be used for their intended purpose.
“This will aid in police visibility and make the police more visible in the communities to help curb crime”, he said.
According to him, the police in the region is challenged in terms of vehicles noting that the donation will enable personnel from NDP access areas where vehicles cannot go.
DCOP Yeboah also bemoaned the insufficient police posts in the region citing Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo as an example indicating that the situation is affecting proper policing especially in the wake of violence.
“We have 26 police districts with 13 police posts but this is woefully inadequate. But plans are in the offing to create more”, he revealed.
He appealed for support from benevolent organizations to help address these challenges aimed at reducing crime in the Region considered as one of the hotspots in Ghana.
