The Ashanti Regional Minister Mr. Peter Anaifi-Mensah has disclosed that the Regional Security Committee (REGSEC) will convene an emergency meeting to find a permanent solution to the recurring market fire at the Kumasi Central Market.
It has literally become an annual ritual for parts of the major market in the Garden City to be gut by fire causing considerable damage to property of traders operating within the area.
But the Minister has hinted that after the REGSEC meeting, his outfit will also meet with the leadership of the traders before enforcing certain recommendations to put a seal cap on the numerous fire outbreaks.
“REGSEC will be meeting. We will also meet with the market women and from there we shall enforce certain recommendations. We just can’t come out with a solution, we need to find a permanent to these perennial fire outbreaks””, he said
A fire outbreak at the Kumasi Central Market Wednesday night destroyed over 400 shops, stalls and goods worth several thousands of Ghana cedis.
The fire which is said to have started around 8:30pm was still raging as of midnight resulting the death of over 1, 000 live birds.
According to Ultimate Fm’s, Isaac Justice Bediako, the fire occurred at the yam section of the market and later sprang to several other parts of the market.
Fire personnel and allied security agencies, supported by about 4 fire fighters have been battling the fire with the entire area sealed off from the public.
Fire personnel on the ground say the Wednesday night outbreak is one of the biggest outbreaks at the market in recent years.
Assistant Fire officer Serbe Cofiadwo is Ashanti regional commander of Ghana National fire service disclosed that the cause of fire is not immediately known/
“We are yet to conduct investigations into the latest outbreak but the dry harmmattan wind and the shea butter pose a major challenge to officials putting out the inferno”, he revealed.
