FIFA election: Africa must stop Hayatou now – Odegbami

Former Green Eagles Captain, Chief Segun Odegbami (MON) has called on African football stakeholders to put an end to the long tenure of the president of the Confederation of African Football, CAF, Alhaji Issa Hayatou.
Chief Odegbami  said that the Camerounian who currently serves as the acting president of FIFA following the ban on its president, Sepp Blatter over corruption allegations, has stayed too long in CAF and now manipulates the system to his own personal advantage.
Issa Hayatou, Acting FIFA President Issa Hayatou, Acting FIFA President The former Chairman of the Governing Council of the National Institute for Sports who was reacting on the endorsement of Bahrain’s candidate for the FIFA top position Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa by CAF on a Channels television sports programme, Sports on Sunday, condemned the decision by CAF stressing that it was a mark of authoritarianism.
“It is ridiculous that CAF will endorse a candidate and force it on federations which are independent. When did we as stakeholders state that our federation, the NFF should vote for an Asian when Africa has a candidate,”he queried.
Describing the endorsement by CAF as “a clear agenda of Hayatou”, Chief Odegbami stressed that “federations are independent of CAF control and should not be coerced into voting any candidate. This is a clear case of authoritarianism and Hayatou must be stopped now. His longevity as CAF president has not helped Africa in any way.”
