Police in the Ashanti Region have reiterated their stance that they cannot keep holding on to or arresting more innocent persons who have no direct links to the violent disturbance between some traditional authorities and irate youth at Old Tafo in the Ashanti Region.
The police, who were responding to calls for the re-arrest of all 48 suspects arrested and released on bail, said such a request could be in violation of the rights of the suspects especially when the police were unable to link them to the crime.
Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) ASP Yussif Tanko however revealed that through their own investigations, they were able to identify 10 persons in a video footage and pictures destroying vehicles and vandalizing public and private property they are going after.
“We understand the sentiments of the traditional authorities and we assure them we will grant them justice. We cannot however in the name of justice arrest innocent people. That will also be injustice to those persons we may arrest. We have not rested in our efforts to bring the brains behind the unfortunate incidents to book”, he indicated
He also denied claims that the police were being manipulated indicating that there are checks and balances to do the right thing.
“Crime is crime and nobody can commit crime and get away with it. Everybody including those who claim we are being biased should volunteer information to us to enable us arrest the suspects believed to be on the run. Everybody has a responsibility to assist us to bring lasting solution to the feud in the area”, he concluded.
