The hopes of Dr. Zenator Rawlings to go to parliament in 2017 are getting slimmer by the day as her status as non registered voter is also in conflict with the constitution of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) which bars unregistered voters from holding themselves as parliamentary candidates.
Daughter of Former Presiden Jerry t Rawlings has been faced with series of litigations ever since her election as parliamentary candidate for Klottey Korle constituency in the Greater Accra Region on the ticket of the NDC.
Article 43 section 9(A) of the ruling NDC’s constitution states;
“A member shall not be qualified to contest in primaries for any parliamentary seat if he: (a) is disqualified under national electoral laws from contesting for any parliamentary seat.
However, Article 94 of the Ghana’s constitution states (1) Subject to the provisions of this article, a person shall not be qualified to be a Member of Parliament unless –
(a) He is a citizen of Ghana, has attained the age of twenty-one years and is a registered voter”
Per these provisions, several persons are already jubilating and awaiting the outright disqualification of the trained medical doctor who is fighting to retain her position as the party’s parliamentary candidate.
The Electoral Commission on February 26 in a letter instructing Lawyer Thaddeus Sory to conduct a suit on its behalf in reference to letters received from Hon Nii Armah Ashittey on the status of Dr Zanetor Rawlings as a registered voter, stated emphatically that the NDC parliamentary candidate for the Klottey Korle constituency in the Greater Accra region Dr. Zanetor Rawlings is not a registered voter.
This clarification was in response to a letter written to them by lawyers for a defeated parliamentary aspirant for the area Nii Armah Ashitey requesting it to declare the eligibility of the daughter of former President John Rawlings.
Per this interpretation, Kasapa Fm’s Maame Broni who has been following the story, states that Dr. Zanetor Rawlings Illegally contested in the NDC Klottey Korle primaries.
