Kumasi Market Fire: Two Arrested for Looting

Two persons have been arrested by the Zongo Divisional Police in the Ashanti Region after they tried looting some shops in the wake of Friday’s dawn fire that ravaged about hundred shops at Kumasi Central market.

According to the Zongo Divisional Police Commander Superintendent Ameyaw Adane, the suspects were chased by fire personnel who spotted them picking items in one of the shops belonging to the fire victims.

They were pursued and upon their arrest, police retrieved one android phone and wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

They were subsequently arrested and taken into police custody at the Zongo Police station where investigations are currently ongoing.

Meanwhile fire fighters have been able to douse the fire which caused extensive damage to properties of market women who are at a loss as to why the market has witnessed recurring fire outbreaks in the last couple of months.

A visit to the scene by Ultimate Fm’s Isaac Justice Bediako revealed the grief-stricken market women trying to salvage the partly burnt items.

As at press time, officials of the Metropolitan National Disaster Management Organization  (NADMO) were yet to visit the scene to assess the extent of damage.
