Bawku: Fire destroys GRA, Vodafone Offices

Fire has razed the offices of the Domestic Tax Revenue Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Vodafone Ghana in Bawku.

The fire, which reportedly began as an explosion around 7:00pm on Friday, lasted for about three hours, reducing everything on its path to ashes. The cause of the explosion is still unknown.

But for the timely arrival of firefighters, the offices of the Ghana Post and the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), which are on the same premises with the affected building, also could have been affected. At present, Vodafone’s network service has been cut off from the area due to the destruction done to its installations by the fire.

An eyewitness, Abdul-Kareem Amandi, told Starr News firemen ran out of water and had to refill their tender to contain the flames.

“The consummation cannot be measured. Nothing could have been retrieved. The burning started as if it was an explosion. Almost the whole of Bawku trooped to that place to see whether they could put out the fire, but it was impossible. It took the Fire Service that came. Their water got finished. They went back for water and the fire continued until they came.

“Although people were supplying water from their homes to help stop the fire, it was a serious fire that could not be stopped by just pouring water on it. You know, the Internal Revenue Service is full of papers and other documents. So, that even helped in the burning process,” he recounted.

The security men on duty as of the time of the outbreak, according to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Bawku, Issaku Bukari, are being interrogated by the police.

“This morning, after the incident, I went there with the police, fire service, officers of the Internal Revenue and Vodafone to see the extent of damage. Almost the two offices are completely burnt down. The Fire Service and the police are still investigating. They have invited the security men who were on post yesterday to continue their investigations,” the MCE said.
