The Ashanti Regional Police commander DCOP Nathan Kofi Boakye has warned the police in the region may consider using radical force to subdue any group of political hooligans who may try destabilizing the second phase of the limited registration exercise.
At least 3 nasty incidents were recorded at some registration centers where thugs of the country’s two major political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) clashed over the alleged registration of minors during the first phase of the exercise.
This led to destruction of registration equipment belonging to the EC according officials.
Speaking with Ultimate Fm’s Isaac Bediako after a Regional Security Council (REGSEC) meeting in Kumasi, the Ashanti Police Chief warned that the police will not tolerate any violent activities in the second phase of the exercise.
“People must be careful as we are going into the second phase. REGSEC has decided that there should not be massing up of people at the registration centres. Motor riders are also to stay away 100 meters radius away from the respective centres. We will use all the force at our disposal to maintain law and order”, he stated.
The Police Chief hinted that a combined team of armed police and military personnel will be put on standby as emergency response to incidents at the notable flash points in the region.
