Asante Kotoko produced a splendid second half performance to hand a 4-1 defeat to the international select side led by former Black Stars skipper Stephen Appiah on Wednesday night under floodlight at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Kumasi in the Unity game.
Asante Kotoko made their intentions clear from the time the referee blew his first whistle by controlling the game. However, they missed all the opportunities created, with the likes of Halifax Sadogo, Emmanuel Osei and Frank Sarfo Gyamfi being the worst culprit. Also Richard Kingston demonstrated glimpses of his heydays antics when he stood in between the Kotoko attackers and goal in the early stages of the first half.
But it was the World Stars who were chasing shadows that shot into the lead when a moment of brilliance from Stephen Appiah, saw his through ball finished perfectly by the former England and Liverpool striker Emile Heskey in the 25th minute, before Kotoko got the equaliser through new recruit Emmanuel Osei before the half time break.
In the second half both sides made several changes in their tea, but it was Kotoko who introduced more men.
Bennett Ofori, who emerged the hero of the day was one of the players who were brought on by the Porcupine Warriors in the last 45 minutes. Also the World Stars introduced the likes of Abukari Damba, Laryea Kingston and Sulley Muntari, all former Black Stars players.
At a point it seemed the changes had benefited the World Stars because they came into the game strongly.
However, Kotoko who had a lot of energy due to their youthful exuberance doubled up their efforts in the last 25 minutes of play and scored three goals in succession.
Bennett Ofori put them into the lead with 20 minutes into the second half, before he scored a spectacular goal and also capitalised on Abukari Damba’s poor judgement due to old age to hit a hat-trick on the night.
Attendance was very low and it might be due to high ticket prices. The lowest price which was the Pupular stand went for GHC 20.
On Saturday 11th June the World Stars will face the Black Stars at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in another Unity game to promote peace towards elections 2016 in Ghana
