The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has hinted of plans to open the floodgates of the Weija Dam in the Greater Accra region.
Residents living along waterways close to the dam have therefore been advised to relocate to higher grounds in order to avert any flooding situation in the wake of the already murky floods in Ghana’s capital.
Communications Manager of GWCL, Stanley Matey disclosed that the spillage is necessary to pump excess water out of the dam following torrential rains in recent times.
According to him, communities including Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower Mc Carthy Hill, Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and other surrounding communities are likely to be affected when the flood gates are opened are
He revealed that minimal spillage has already started with the opening of one gates of the dam at a very low level of about three inches, but added that because the dam is rising steadily more spill gates are to be opened in the coming days.
