A 19-year-old exotic dancer in Connecticut has been arrested and charged with arson after allegedly setting fire to her friend’s stepfather’s business — and the only reason she was caught was because of a potato.
According to multiple sources, Willow Martin had lent her friend and fellow exotic dancer, Breonna Constantino, $1,200 during a beach trip to Wildwood, New Jersey last year so that her then-best friend could buy some new clothes. But when Constantino wasn’t able to pay her back as quickly as she’d liked, Martin hatched a plan to burn down Constantino’s stepfather’s construction business as revenge.
While her boyfriend, Matthew Garguilo, watched on, Martin smashed a window at the business, poured a can of gasoline inside, and used a flaming napkin to set the building ablaze.
According to The Cut, the resulting blast blew Martin through the door, and the two later returned to the scene to celebrate their success.
However, it was the second part of Martin’s plan that ultimately blew her cover: Along with the fire, Martin had also decided to stuff a potato into the tailpipe of Constantino’s stepdad’s car.
As Garguilo told authorities, she had hoped to blow up the car’s engine, but from what he could see, she hadn’t pushed it in far enough for the desired effect.
As a result, Constantino’s stepdad quickly discovered the potato and turned it over to police.
The DNA they found on the tuber then led them back to Martin’s (now ex) boyfriend, and Garguilo revealed that Martin was the mastermind behind the entire crime.
At the moment, Martin is facing multiple charges, including second-degree arson, conspiracy to commit arson, third-degree burglary, and first-degree criminal mischief. She is being held on $110,000 bonds and was arraigned on Wednesday. Garguilo is being held on $35,000 bonds for helping her.
