The outgoing General Officer Command for the central command in Kumasi, Brigadier General J.A Boampong has charged his successor to understand the political and tribal dynamics of the region to discharge his duty effectively.
The official handing over ceremony of authority of the Central Command, from the outgoing commander Brigadier General to the incoming commander Brigadier General C.B Alhassan was held yesterday at a colourful ceremony at the premises of the Central Command.
The august ceremony had in attendance the Regional Minister, Alexander Ackon, members of the regional Security Council and other dignitaries.
The high point of the ceremony was the symbolic handing over of the command batton to the new commander by the out gone commander.
The out gone commander, Brigadier General J.A Boampong in his farewell remarks showed his appreciation to all the units under his command for performing creditably in all tasks and admonished the various units to give the new commanding officer their maximum support beyond their call of duty.
“This does not mean to suggest that life has been cosy all through. This Command’s Area Of Responsibilty remains a volatile one, due to its unique socio-political- economic disposition. The numerous cases of ethnic and chieftaincy crises, land litigations, armed trafficking, cross-border crime, illegal mining and robbery among others make life here a real challenge. Movement of troops from one operational role and theatre to the other occurs on a daily basis. There is therefore constant pressure on personnel and logistics to meet the recurring operational demands.
This notwithstanding. I think commanding this command is an experience that I will forever cherish. The quality of troops serving in this command is portrayed by the slogans of the units. Where others say it is scary, 3 BN will tell you to be as FEARLESS as the SCORPION!”
“The units under command and staff at Headquarters have been very supportive and hardworking and I assure you of their capability and professionalism that have enabled this headquarters to function efficiently. I wish you Gods guidance and good health and may success crown all your efforts,” he said.
The guest of honor, the regional minister, John Alexander Ackon, remarked that Brigadier General C.B Alhassan is a worthy successor and expressed confidence in him taking up his role effectively and efficiently.
“I am aware that General Cosmos Alhassan is not new to Kumasi and the region, with his depth of knowledge and experience, the regional Security Council has another competent replacement.
“I look forward to a very good relationship with General Cosmos as we’ve had with his predecessor I believe General Boampong has had time to take you around and that you are already getting settled at your new station, let me assure you that Ashanti is peaceful and not plagued with serious security challenges except for illegal mining activites, the Fullani herdsmen menace and sporadic armed robbery incidents. Fortunately we have dependable stakeholders in our chieftaincy institution that support the regional security council to handle all matters of security interests and I’m hopeful that you shall not be handicapped in your handling of affairs in this region.
As we inch gradually towards election 2016 let us look ahead to be able to identify simmering tensions in order to preempt action to restore order, lets identify hot spots and put measures in place to discourage hooliganism and bring sanity to the electoral process. I am committed to peaceful conduct of the elections before during and after and your support is expected in this regard,” he stated.
