The United Democratic Party (UDP) has promised an overhaul of the country’s agricultural sector to boost crop production in order to yield the required returns.
Dr. Yaw Kumey, Founder and Leader of the party, promised to inject a lot of resources into the sector which is considered one of the major contributors of the Ghanaian economy to accelerate development if offered the nod to form the new government in 2017.
He specifically stated his resolve to modernize agriculture through construction of irrigation facilities to allow for an all-year-round production and provide farmers with vital equipment and improved planting materials.
According to him, farmers will have access to extension services aimed at teaching them modern farm practices to achieve the needed results, adding that government institutions including schools will also be encouraged to go into commercial farming.
He observed that these measures if implemented could boost food production levels to assure the country of food security.
Dr. Yaw Kumey said Ghana will to put to optimal use the vast arable land it had been blessed with to feed itself and for export to bring in foreign exchange, hinting of plans to also vigorously embark on affordable housing projects to cater for the growing Ghanaian population.
