Brace yourself: TMZ reports that Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
According to TMZ, Angelina asked for physical custody of the Jolie-Pitt brood, with Brad to have joint legal custody and visitation. Brangelina got married in 2014, but prior to that had been a couple since 2004.
They famously became involved after filming Mr. and Mrs. Smith together, while Brad was still married to Jennifer Aniston.
TMZ also notes that Angelina’s decision to divorce Brad is entirely due to “the way Brad was parenting the children” and does not have anything to do with infidelity. According to Us Weekly, Brangelina celebrated their two-year wedding anniversary last month with a stay at the Beverly Hills Hotel. “It was just the two of them,” said Us‘s source. “They had dinner and spent the night, and that was it.” In 2015, they starred together in the film By the Sea, which Angelina directed.
Update 9/20, 11:09 a.m.: A lawyer for Angelina Jolie has confirmed to the Associated Press that she has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt.
Update 9/20, 11:25 a.m.: Attorney Robert Offer reiterated in a statement that the divorce is about Angelina’s concern for her family. “This decision was made for the health of the family,” Offer said. “She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time.”
TMZ has also updated their post to say that their “sources” claim Angelina was “fed up” with Brad’s alcohol and marijuana consumption, as well as what she perceives as his “anger problem.”
Update 9/20, 11:49 a.m.: In opposition to TMZ’s claim that there was no third party involved in the split, Page Six reports that Angelina decided to file for divorce after a private detective discovered that Brad had been unfaithful. This investigator allegedly found that Brad had been cheating on Angelina with his Allied co-star Marion Cotillard and “Russian hookers while boozing it up with coworkers.”
“He’s in the throes of some insane midlife crisis, and Angie is fed up,’’ Page Six‘s source said. “She hired a private eye because she felt that he was fooling around with her on the set, and it turns out, he was. And that was the final straw.”
Update 9/20, 1:33 p.m.: Brad Pitt has commented on the news in a statement to People. “I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well being of our kids,” he said. “I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.”
Update 9/20, 6:00 p.m.: Angelina Jolie’s father, actor Jon Voight, has officially spoken out about his daughter’s divorce in an interview with Inside Edition. “Something very serious must have happened for Angie to make a decision like this,” he said. “I don’t know what it is. It’s a sad thing. Say a little prayer.”
“I am concerned for Angie and the children and hopefully I will be seeing them very soon,” he continued.
