Supporters of the National Democratic (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Daboya constituency have clashed at the Electoral Commission (EC) office at the West Gonja district in the Northern region following some confusion over the ongoing votes transfer exercise.
Members of the two parties were protesting over the legitimacy of persons transferring their votes to the constituency when the fight broke.
The supporters after hot verbal exchanges physically attacked one another. There were reports of casualties.
The NPP Daboya constituency organizer Mahamadu Mumuni was allegedly arrested by the police during the skirmish.
Members of the NPP accused the NDC of transporting some people from Chereponi and Tamale south constituencies to engage in the process.
They also accused the electoral commission of conniving with the NDC to deny their members opportunity to transfer their votes.
The Party constituency communication officer Mr. Adam Yahaya Lion told Ultimate News
“the EC is conniving with the NDC, they registered members of the NDC and when it was time to register our people, they said the forms were finished”.
“The people are not from Daboya and we won’t allow them; yes, we fought and people are wounded. They have arrested our organizer and was trying to arrest our research officer,’ he fumed.
West Gonja district police commander confirmed the incident and said the NPP executive was arrested for assaulting a community police.
He said calm has returned but they were patrolling the district capital to ensure absolute peace.
