Some New Patriotic Party(NPP) supporters on Friday, January 6, 2017 deserted their homes to spend the night at the Independence square ahead of the inauguration of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as President later today.
Most of them clad in NPP colours, on the eve of the Inauguration were seen sleeping off on pavements around the Blackstar Square enclave in the capital, where the investiture of the President-elect, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is billed to be held today, Saturday, January 7, 2017.
Several of these supporters had traveled from Kumasi, Takoradi and other parts of the country to participate in the inauguration ceremony of the new leader.
The security personnel detailed at the main entrance of the Independence Square, had sealed off the event venue and prevented the fans from entering the main yard early before the programme kicks off later today.
About 4:00 am supporters were already filling the event venue stretching on the Broadway, as most of them sat down on the street, while others leaned against the metal barricades and the walls awaiting opening of the programme Saturday morning.
Akufo-Addo will be the fifth President of the republic after swearing in today. The 72-year old served as Foreign Minister and Attorney General in the NPP government that ruled between 2001 and 2009.
