The Ashanti Regional Police Command has served notice that it will arrest and detain drunkards who will try to foment trouble during the burial of Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II.
Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) ASP Mohammed Yusif Tanko revealed that such suspects will be detained until such a time they are found to be sober and not exhibiting any signs of aggression.
“We will lock them in cells until a time the alcohol will clear from their eyes. They will then be released to go home without any charge because there is no provision in the laws of the land to prosecute drunkards”, he disclosed on Abusua Nkomo hosted by Kwame Adinkra.
ASP Tanko advised persons who will take in alcohol to do so in moderation warning that their conduct will closely be monitored by the police who will be deployed to vantage points around the Manhyia Palace to ensure that nothing untoward happens.
In his view, mourners are expected to behave in a civil manner as a show of respect for the deceased queen mother and the bereaved royal family reiterating that they will not take kindly the rowdy conduct of any drunk within the stipulated security zone.
“Car parks have been designated for various categories of persons including the VIP. You are only allowed to park at an area you have a pass and not anywhere at all around the Manhyia Palace. The police will be there to inspect your car passes before you are either allowed to a certain area or not”, he added.
