The collapsed steel bridge over River Oda at Anwiankwanta on the Kumasi-Obuasi road to be closed down for maintenance after Kumasi based Abusua FM’s Osei Kwadwo’s report, the Bekwai Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Kyei Baffour has announced.
Mr Kyei Baffour in an interview with Osei Kwadwo said government will not wait for the bridge to cause disaster, hence the decision to close down the bridge for maintenance.
He added that drivers in the Bekwai Municipality, Obuasi Municipality and Amansie Central District will be directed to use the Danyase- Obuasi road if coming from Kumasi to the area during the maintenance period.
Drivers and passengers in the Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region appealed to government and the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways to as a matter of urgency; repair the steel bridge over River Oda at Anwiankwanta on the Kumasi-Obuasi road, before it causes any fatality.
According to investigations conducted by Abusua Dawuro’s Osei Kwadwo, the bridge has not seen any maintenance since it was constructed in 1960 by an Australian Construction Company.
The drivers speaking to Osei Kwadwo said unless steps are taken to repair the damaged caused by erosion and weak structures, danger was imminent.
