CK Akonnor, head coach for Obuasi Ashanti Gold has revealed they were surprised by Elmina Sharks after their defeat at home on match day 23.
According to Akonnor, the tactics deployed by the visitors made it difficult for the ‘Miners’ to break through their defence – hence bowing down to a 1-2 defeat at home.
This is their first defeat after seven league matches without losing a game – winning six and picking one draw. Their last defeat was a 4-1 defeat against Ebusua Dwarfs.
Eric Osei shot the visitors in front from the spot after Emmanuel Ocran had missed from a similar spot. Diminutive winger Benjamin Tweneboah doubled their lead minutes after. Prince Owusu on the 75th minute pulled one back but could not stage a comeback in the game.
“Defensively we didn’t do well at all. In the midfield we were weak as well. We showed a lot of weakness in the game,” Akonnor said after the game.
“These guys [Elmina Sharks] have taken us by surprise. They were very discipline and defensive, which made things very difficult for us.”
The defeat on Sunday has thrown the Miners back to the relegation zone, sitting above 14th placed Liberty Professionals, having 28 points.
Their next league match is an away game against Liberty Professionals who have relegation cunningly staring at their face.
