Healthy Humor in Marriage

In the last Marriage Insight we addressed a pretty “heavy” topic. It was, Hurtful Humor in Marriage. This time we want to show you another aspect that we shouldn’t neglect. And that is Healthy Humor in Marriage.

The most respected marriage experts agree. Laughing together is essential in building a “good” marriage. But even if they didn’t agree we know the Bible says, “Laughter (or a cheerful heart) is good medicine.” (Proverbs 17:22) We don’t know about you, but we’re not going to argue against the Bible. So we’re applying it liberally. Hey! Why not be as healthy as possible! This is one of those cases where a little is good, but a lot is even better.

Healthy Humor in Marriage

This is so important to us. We continually infuse laughter in our marriage relationship as often as we can. We make a point of laughing together because we know it’s important. As Cindy says, “If the laughter has gone out of your marriage, WARNING, WARNING, WARNING!”

We know life and marriage can be hard. And when it is, the last thing you think of is to find something funny to laugh about together as a couple. But from our personal experience we found the most stressful times become more bearable when we brought humor to the forefront. We take it to heart what marriage expert John Gottman says. “Couples who laugh together, last together.”

It is so easy today to find lots of funny material on the Internet in places like You Tube. If you enter “Christian Comedians” in their search box you’ll find hours of funny things to watch together. Some of our favorites are Michael Junior, Tim Hawkins, the Skit Guys, Mark Lowry, and Modern Marriage Moments. Here are a few links to their skits to start you on this marital laughing mission.

Don’t Forget Clean Comedians and Jokes Too

There are also several non-Christian “clean” comedians that can also make us laugh. There aren’t many of them, but there are a few. And if all you want are some clean jokes, you can find those too.

So, we’re going to have you practice this. Below are a few things that made us laugh. Read them together. And then when you have more time find a funny video to watch together. Once you start doing this on a regular basis you’ll see how the mood can change in your home. Here is a start:

“My wife keeps telling me I shouldn’t pee in the bath. Or if I really have to I should at least wait till she gets out.”

“If it weren’t for marriage, men would go through life thinking they had no faults at all.”

“A woman has the last word in any argument. Anything a man says after that… is the beginning of a new argument.”

“A woman marries a man expecting he will change. But he doesn’t. A man marries a woman expecting that she won’t change. And she does.”

“A man has 5 items in his bathroom. He has a toothbrush, shaving cream, razor, a bar of soap, and a towel. The average number of items in the typical woman’s bathroom is 337. A man would not be able to identify most of these items.”

One wife wrote:

“During an attack of laryngitis I lost my voice completely for two days. To help me communicate with him, my husband devised a system of taps. One tap meant ‘Give me a kiss.’ Two taps meant ‘No.’ Three taps meant ‘Yes.’ And 95 taps meant ‘Take out the garbage.’”

We hope these brought a smile to your face. Share it with your spouse. It’s a great start.

Laugh together and be blessed…
