Surgeons at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have suspended new emergency admissions.
The decision which takes effect from September 12, 2017 was considered during an emergency meeting.
A letter intercepted by Ultimate News issued by the residents and directorate of surgery on Tuesday indicates that the decision was borne out of lack of doctors at the facility.
The letter signed by the various surgeons written to the Chief Executive Officer of KATH Dr. Oheneba Danso indicated that further admissions will endanger the lives of patients and impede provision of quality health care.
‘We would like to put on record that this was anticipated by all residents of the hospital and management was notified in writing two weeks ago. Unfortunately, management is yet to communicate a response,’ the letter said.
Meanwhile, the Medical Director has been on leave since September 8, 2017, but it is unclear as to whether his leave has any correlation with the suspension of emergency admissions or not.
KATH woes continue to deepen with this development as junior doctors weeks ago threatened to embark on a strike due to their unpaid salaries.
