The Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast , Professor George Kwaku Toku Oduro says it is totally wrong for anyone to conclude that he is against one of the flagship interventions of the Akufo-Addo led NPP government, the Free SHS policy.
According to him, he has only advocated the implementation of a free policy which would be indexed with quality.
The Pro Vice Chancellor, in March this year, predicted disaster for the free Senior High School policy if government did not take steps to ensure quality.
He noted that, the situation at senior high schools was nothing to write home about and was likely to be compounded with a free SHS policy.
For these comments, the Education Minister Mathew Opoku Prempeh said the criticism by the Pro- Vice Chancellor was without basis.
He found it hypocritical the Pro Vice Chancellor would criticize a policy which, he said, was implemented some 50 years back and had benefitted many Ghanaians.
In response to this, the pro Vice Chancellor advised government to welcome suggestions from stakeholders of education and not take such contributions as votes against the policy.
He has since been an object of reference and insult in the media landscape in the central region by NPP communicators anytime they talk about people who wish the failure of the free SHS programme.
The view that Prof. Oduro was against the policy has caused him to echo his stance on ensuring quality with the free SHS that has been rolled out.
Prof. Oduro says he has been totally misquoted. He added he was very happy that the cautions he gave with regard to the roll out of the policy were now coming out.
Prof K.T Oduro advised the Ministry of Education to hold a stakeholder’s forum to critically assess and implement the free SHS Policy.
He suggested that the free SHS policy should be seen as a national challenge devoid of any political interference.
