C/R: 11 arrested over illegal mining

11 persons are set to be arraigned before the Cape Coast court for their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities in the Offin river in the Upper Denkyira district town of Dunkwa-on-offin in the central region.

The 11 were arrested following a swoop by a special task task force of the Small Scale Miners Association in conjunction with the police.

The 11 are seen as the kingpins behind the continuous degradation of the area despite a ban on small scale mining in the area.

The activities of the galamseyers according to authorities have not only degraded the land thereby hampering crop farming but has also destroyed aquatic life with many residents finding it difficult to even utilise water from the said river which is a source of drinking water to many in the area.

The Upper Denkyira area is described as the headquarters of the galamsey menace as it is the area that witnessed the killing of Major Maxwell Mahama who were in the area to ward off such activities.
