The newly constructed ultra modern Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has been commissioned by the first lady Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo.
The facility which is the only green hospital in Africa built by African Building Partners was christened Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II (Late Asantehemaa).
The First Lady’s attention was drawn to the unhygienic state of the unit after a media report after which a national funding raising campaign was launched to solicit funds for the construction.
Previously, mothers who were admitted at the Unit were sleeping on the floor as there were few beds at the unit. Babies were also sharing incubators with other babies
The construction was done within some months to give the facility a facelift.
The MBU comprise breast feeding area, incubators, beds, baby cots, three surgical wards etc.
Mrs Rebecca said the media is a powerful tool in social development challenging journalists to take up more social issues to impact lives.
She charged authorities to ensure proper maintenance of the facility expressing the Rebecca Foundation’s readiness to support the maintenance of the facility.
He expressed appreciation to the Asantehemaa Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and his wife Lady Julia for supporting the project.
The First Lady, Second Lady Mrs Samira Bawumia, Lady Julia and others were given citations for their immense contributions towards the project.
The commissioning of the project attracted nurses, doctors, politicians and traditional leaders.
