KNUST students threaten demo over management’s decision to make Katanga, Conti mixed halls

Some students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have threatened to stage on demonstration following management’s decision to convert University (Katanga) and Unity (Conti) into mixed halls.

Management of the school wants Katanga and Unity Hall to accommodate female students.

A student in the school speaking in an interview with Abusua FM’s Osei Kwadwo said the decision will destroy a long-standing tradition of the two halls.

According to him, they will stage a massive demonstration if the management decides to implement its decision.

“Management’s decision to convert Katanga and Conti halls into mixed halls is a very bad decision and we won’t allow them to implement that decision. Tradition is tradition and we have to protect the tradition in the school,” he said.

Meanwhile, the University Relation Officer of KNUST Kwame Yeboah Jnr said the decision will help improve gender balance in the school.

“Those who don’t support our decision can stage demonstration to show their displeasure but it should be a peaceful demonstration. Their demonstration cannot stop us from implementing our decision. We have to provide accommodation for female students in the school,” he said.
