Liverpool defender Joe Gomez to miss Champions League final

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez will miss the Champions League final and is a doubt for England’s 2018 World Cup campaign in Russia this summer after undergoing ankle surgery.

The 20-year-old had never fully recovered from the injury he picked up while on international duty and aggravated the problem while playing against West Bromwich Albion and then Stoke City.

His performances in those games were questioned but it has been revealed that he was carrying an injury during those fixtures and will now miss the final with Real Madrid in Kiev on 26 May.

His injury is the second big loss to both Liverpool and England, following Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s knee complaint which ended his season against Roma.

Jurgen Klopp still has concerns over Adam Lallana and Emre Canas well, with the former still not fully fit after his hamstring problems and the latter struggling with a back problem. Joel Matip’s thigh, which has caused him to miss the last few weeks.
