The association of Small Scale Miners has vowed to drastically deal with illegal miners in the country if government lifts the ban on ‘galamsey’.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has assured that shortly, government will put out a statement setting out a comprehensive roadmap, including the lifting of the ban on small-scale mining, to deal with, on a permanent basis, the grave threat of ‘galamsey’ to the present and future health of Ghana.
Speaking to Abusua News’ Nana Ama Annor in an interview, the Director of Research and Planning of the Association Mr. Mike Gizo said licensed small-scale miners have over the years contributed to the fight against illicit mining (galamsey) in the country.
According to Mike Gizo, due to low media coverage of their actions, the general public is unaware of their efforts.
“We used to fight against these illegal miners, but because we did not have the support, we could not win the war against them. We have taken positive steps to end ‘galamsey’, but because there was no media coverage on these actions we took people are unaware. We will continue to collaborate with the government to fight illegal miners in the country,” he said.
