Hostel for Kayayes not build by government –Adiza Zongo Pioneer

The Kayaye Association has refuted media reports indicating that government has built a hostel at Sepe in the Asokore Mampong Municipality for head porters otherwise called “Kayayes”.

President of the Ghana Kayaye Association, Adiza Zongo points out that the building was a dejected school facility which was rather renovated and earmarked for the housing and training of young women in vocations.

“This building would not only be for accommodating the porters but also opportunities will be given for girls interested in furthering their education or acquiring skills training such as hairdressing, sewing and other businesses. We also have a nursery for those with children”, she added.

Speaking to host of the Ultimate Breakfast Show, Lantam Papanko, Adiza emphasized that the government has several plans for head porters including changing the name Kayaye to a much professional name.

She also disclosed that government has sponsored her training outside the country to enable her acquire skills to train the female head porters.

“I have been in this job for long, and it’s because of the kayaye business. I first went to America and later left for Canada for a training to look for ways to improve the lives of the female porters.”
