The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) says it will not distribute any relief items to people whose structures were destroyed in its demolition exercise in parts of the Ashanti Regional Capital Kumasi.
Over a hundred structures close to river bodies at Aful Nkwanta, Aboabo, Dagomba-line and Anloga junction have been pulled down to prevent flooding.
The exercise which has displaced hundreds of residents became necessary after floods killed at least 6 persons in the metropolis over the weekend.
Ashanti regional NADMO director Kwabena Nsenkyire however contends the affected people were living in unapproved areas and do not qualify for any relief from government.
He told host of the Ultimate Breakfast Show Lantam Papanko, “those living on the water ways are aware that they are living on the water ways so no matter whatever relief items you give them, the next one or two weeks, there is going to be another flood so we are not going to waste much money on such recalcitrant citizens who are not ready to vacate these areas.”
Mr Kwabena Nsenkyire also pointed out that his outfit is working with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to earmark all buildings sited in the path of running water for demolition.
